It is Time to Work Together Towards a More Equitable Clean Economy

Official Statement

Washington, DC

April 5, 2024

Yesterday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced its selections for the National Clean Investment Fund (NCIF) and the Clean Community Investment Accelerator (CCIA) from the $27 billion Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF). These choices prioritize disadvantaged communities, marking a significant stride towards a cleaner and fairer economy.

As a sub-awardee of the Coalition for Green Capital (CGC)’s $5 billion NCIF grant, we are excited about furthering this mission. CGC’s proposal is unique as the consortium is largely made up of regional green banks, CDFIs, and climate-centered entities. We intend to lean into our existing networks and expand upon their ability to energize communities across the country and maximize the EPA’s financial commitment to the green economy.

The $5 billion award to CGC is a tremendous start, though more capital will be needed to address a multi-trillion-dollar opportunity around clean energy investments. At CFE, we intend to leverage technological solutions, work with public and private partners on scale and standards, and, most importantly, put frontline communities at the tip of the green spear, as that is where comprehensive change will happen for the future of America. As a minority-led CDFI, we are committed to using these funds to empower low-income communities with the benefits of clean energy, including job opportunities, cost savings, and a healthier environment.

The GGRF awards are geared towards bringing cleaner energy to underserved communities. As an immigrant and person of color myself, this historic investment by the U.S. government holds personal significance as it focuses on equality for our frontline communities and those facing structural barriers to progress.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the recipients and eagerly anticipate engaging in meaningful collaboration. Leveraging our respective institutional strengths and diverse collective expertise will be crucial in seizing this historic opportunity.

Together, we can build a sustainable future for all Americans, driven by opportunity and environmental stewardship.
